Council implements a corporate ICT training centre to capacitate internal staff to improve service delivery


The IT section of the Municipality has implemented a corporate ICT training centre in the Municipality that is equipped with latest computers, hi-definition audio video equipment to help train the staff to improve service delivery.

GMM HAS A NEW SPEAKER

 

Ms Lindi Masina was elected a new Speaker of Govan Mbeki Municipal Council during a Council meeting on 28 May 2008. Ms Masina takes over the position which has been vacant for few months after the passing on of Cllr. Joanah Jiyane on 4 January 2008.

Ms Masina, was the member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Corporate Services after the local government elections on 01 March 2006 until she was appointed Speaker. She has been part of the struggle since her school days during the late 80’s. She has been a teacher atIkhethelo Secondary School for the past 12 years before being elected as a councillor in 2006. She took an active part in the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) holding a position of a gender convenor where she was ensuring that the issues of women are taken care of. She is also passionate about issues that touch women and children. Ms Masina’s vision is to see the public taking an active role in the affairs of the municipality through structures such as Ward Committees. Her focus is mainly on

Delivering real change and real progress as the mandate given by the voters.

She regards public participation as a cornerstone of good governance at local government. She has not wasted anytime in fulfilling her duties as she has already presided on more than two council  meetings and hosted a successful two-day Ward Committee Summit. During the Summit which was attended by members of Ward Committees, Councillors, Community Development Workers and the private sector, she emphasized that her focus will be to maximise community participating on municipal programmes and the importance of co-operation from all councillors and municipal officials.

GMM WELCOMES NEW MEMBER OF MAYORAL COMMITTEE

Govan Mbeki Municipality has elected a new member of the mayoral committee, Ms Zodwa Mkhwanazi, responsible for Corporate Services.

A veteran of the struggle, In 1985 Cllr Mkhwanazi was a member of the Mpumelelo Youth Congress and due to constant harassment by the Security Branch she fled the country for Tanzania .. While in exile she was exposed to various military and political activities of the African National Congress. In 1986 she underwent military training in Angola the following year to Cuba for three years for further military training. In 1990 she went to Zambia as a member of Umkhonto Wesizwe preparing for repatriation.

On her return to South Africa in 1991 she was integrated into the SANDNF and deployed to the National Peace Keeping Force until it was disbanded. In 1995 Cllr Mkhwanazi was active in the local ANC Women's League. During the local government elections in 2000 and again in 2006, she was elected as a councillor.

Govan Mbeki Municipality hosts Ward Committee Summit

SECUNDA –Govan Mbeki Municipality hosted a two day Ward Committee Summit on 07 – 08 June 2008 at Lillian Ngoyi Centre.   

The aims of the workshop were to strengthen public participation process and ensure that information from the municipality is taken to ward committees

All departments presented information clarifying their various activities and services.                           

The newly elected Speaker of Council, Councillor Lindi Masina said it was important that ward committees should be assisted so that they are able to do their work properly.

The Executive Mayor of Gert Sibande District Municipality, Councillor Andries Gamede applauded Govan Mbeki Municipality for hosting such an important summit and that the information should be imparted to the public.                                     

The Acting Executive Mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Councillor Okie Mtsweni said that ward committees must play a critical role in ensuring that recent acts of xenophobia and should be detected before they occur so that this violence should be avoided.

More than four hundred (400) Ward Committees, Community Development Workers and Councillors attended the summit.
